Sindh Government Launches Investigation into Theft of Paintings Featured in Kabhi Mein Kabhi Tum from Karachi’s Frere Hall

The Sindh government has initiated an investigation following a social media uproar regarding the theft of paintings from the historic Frere Hall in Karachi. The incident came to light after artist Saifi Soomro, who hails from Daharki, discovered that his stolen artworks, which had been on display at Frere Hall years ago, were featured in the Pakistani drama Kabhi Mein Kabhi Tum.

In response to the growing online attention, Sindh’s Minister for Culture and Tourism, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, issued a notice and formed a two-member investigative committee. The committee comprises the Director General of Culture and the Director General of Antiquities, and has been tasked with thoroughly investigating the missing artwork and presenting a detailed report.

Speaking on the matter, Minister Shah said, “The theft of paintings by a young artist was brought to my attention through social media. We have initiated a comprehensive investigation, and further action will be taken based on the findings. Any negligence or misconduct will be addressed accordingly.”

The stolen artworks, which were part of Soomro’s thesis, were initially displayed at Frere Hall but had gone missing. Recently, they resurfaced in the popular TV drama, raising serious concerns about the security and management of public galleries.

Soomro shared the details of his stolen work on social media, sparking widespread outrage. Many netizens have urged him to take legal action against Frere Hall, as the paintings were reportedly still present there when the drama was filmed.

Minister Shah emphasized the government’s support for young artists, calling them “a valuable asset to the nation.” He assured that no injustice would be tolerated, and that the government is committed to holding those responsible accountable.

Further actions are expected once the investigation concludes, as the government works to resolve the issue and ensure better protection for public displays of art.
