Rhea Chakraborty gets relief in Sushant Singh Rajput case
In a major relief for Bollywood actor Rhea Chakraborty, the Supreme Court of India dismissed a petition by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) challenging the cancellation of lookout circulars (LOCs) for her and her family members in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. The court’s decision also impacts her brother Showik Chakraborty, and her parents, Sandhya and Lt. Col Indrajit Chakraborty (retd), who were all implicated in connection with Rajput’s tragic passing.
The bench, consisting of Justices B.R. Gavai and K.V. Viswanathan, found the petition “frivolous,” noting it was filed mainly due to the high-profile nature of the case, according to Indian news agencies. This ruling upholds the Bombay High Court’s earlier decision to quash the LOCs, which were initially issued following the actor’s death in June 2020.
Rhea Chakraborty and Rajput were in a relationship when the Chhichhore actor was found dead in his Bandra home in Mumbai on June 14, 2020. Following his death, his father, K.K. Singh, filed an FIR accusing Chakraborty of “abetment to suicide” and “money laundering.” Subsequently, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested her, and she spent nearly a month in jail before being granted bail by the Bombay High Court, which cited no prior criminal history.
The LOCs, initially issued that year, were canceled by the Bombay HC earlier in 2024 due to insufficient grounds. The Supreme Court’s recent decision is expected to bring significant relief to Chakraborty and her family, allowing them to move freely without the restrictions imposed by the LOCs.
