Netflix Sued Over ‘Squid Game’ for Allegedly Copying 2009 Indian Movie ‘Luck’

Netflix is facing a lawsuit over its global hit series Squid Game, with Indian filmmaker Soham Shah claiming the show plagiarized the storyline of his 2009 movie Luck. According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Shah alleges that both Squid Game and Luck revolve around desperate individuals in financial ruin competing in lethal games for large cash prizes, with wealthy spectators betting on the outcomes.

Shah, the creator of Luck, asserts that he first developed the film’s plot in 2006 and released it globally in 2009. The lawsuit points out that Squid Game writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk has publicly stated he wrote Squid Game around the same time Luck was released, which Shah argues raises questions about the originality of the Netflix series.

The legal filing also highlights how Squid Game played a pivotal role in Netflix’s dramatic market growth, reportedly increasing the streaming giant’s value by over $900 million following the show’s massive success. Shah is seeking financial compensation and aiming to prevent further copyright infringement by Netflix.

As of now, Netflix has not issued a public response to the lawsuit. Squid Game has become one of the most-watched series in Netflix’s history, making the outcome of this legal battle highly significant for the company.
