The Legend of Maula Jatt Set for Indian Theatrical Release on October 2, Limited to Punjab Region

After more than a decade, a Pakistani film is set to hit Indian cinemas once again. The highly anticipated The Legend of Maula Jatt, a 2022 box office sensation, will be screened in Indian theatres on October 2, but its release will be restricted to the Punjab region. This move marks a significant milestone in cross-border cultural exchange, with the film’s distribution handled by Zee Studios.

Producer Nadeem Mandviwalla confirmed the limited release in a recent interview with Indian media, expressing optimism about the film’s prospects. “It might take a little time as the film is releasing after two years and the excitement is no longer there as it was in 2022, during its original release,” Mandviwalla remarked. “However, the word of mouth of the film is bound to create that excitement again.”

The Legend of Maula Jatt is a modern-day remake of the iconic 1979 Pakistani film Maula Jatt and set new box office records during its 2022 release. Directed by Bilal Lashari, the film stars Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan and has been praised for its cinematic brilliance and stunning performances. Its upcoming Indian release is considered a litmus test for how Pakistani cinema is received across the border, particularly amidst ongoing security concerns and the potential for controversy.

Lashari hinted at the strategic release location on social media, writing, “Releasing in India, Punjab on Wednesday 2nd Oct!”

Zee Studios, a subsidiary of Zee Entertainment Enterprises, is at the forefront of this release. Having previously promoted Pakistani content via its Zindagi channel, Zee is bringing The Legend of Maula Jatt to Indian audiences, sparking excitement within both countries’ film industries. As industry observers wait to gauge the film’s reception, there is cautious optimism about its performance in the Indian market, with many hoping this marks a positive step for future cultural collaborations.
